CODE for Commonwealth and Country
Driven by our vision that every child deserves to be ready to compete and thrive in the unfolding 21st century world, and recognizing the critical need for digital literacy, STEM and robotics as a component of 21st century K-12 education, Pitt-Johnstown launched, in 2016, an ambitious community initiative to establish, support, and advance digital literacy in the greater Johnstown area.
As part of our CODE (Computational-Learning Opportunities in a Digital Environment) for Commonwealth & Country project, Pitt-Johnstown is pioneering an ambitious effort to promote Computational-learning Opportunities in a Digital Environment (CODE) and is working to develop and support CODE-smart schools in our area.
It is an exciting time for us here at Pitt-Johnstown as we embark on an innovative and transformational outreach initiative in partnership with our local schools.
Through the CODE initiative, we seek to introduce young people to coding as well as how to use coding skills to improve critical thinking and problem solving skills across all areas of learning. A major area of emphasis will be using our CODE method to enhance teaching and learning in math and other STEM areas so as to improve educational outcomes. Working with partners in local schools in the years ahead, we envision that CODE will help change the trajectory of our region as students become better prepared to thrive in a global digital economy marked by increasing complexity and rapid automation.
